He heard the familiar sound of the lawnmower, the rhythmic drone that always signaled the beginning of another day. From his window, he watched Mr. Evans meticulously manicure his lawn, his movements precise and purposeful. The perfection of his neighbor's yard only served to make him feel more uneasy.

He felt a tightening in his chest. He knew the request was coming. It was just a matter of time. He'd seen the way Mr. Evans had been eyeing the neglected patch of ground that bordered their properties.

A sharp knock sounded on the front door. He took a deep breath. His heart was hammering. He pulled the door open.

"Good morning," Mr. Evans said, his smile bright. "I was hoping, perhaps, to extend the rose bushes a little…if it wouldn't be too much trouble…" He felt his face heat up.
