Gemotions

The family reunion was in full swing, a cacophony of laughter and loud chatter. My cousin, David, a man known for his love of heavy metal music and cynicism, called everyone to attention. “I’ve found peace,” he announced, his voice surprisingly soft. He was embracing the Baha’i faith.

My head spun. I leaned back against the porch railing, my hand automatically reaching for the beer I had earlier been enjoying, but then I realized I didn't actually want it. The music, the noise, the celebration all suddenly seemed to fade away. It was as if I was watching from behind a pane of glass.
