The bell above the door jangled, announcing Robert's reluctant entry. He hated pawn shops. He'd been sent to find a replacement for a broken chain saw. Then he spotted it. The ring. His grandmother’s sapphire ring, the one she had sworn to wear until her dying day.

He felt his heart start to race. The blood pounded in his ears. His hands clenched into fists. He leaned closer, peering through the glass, trying to reconcile reality with what he was seeing. This had to be a mistake.

“You look like you've seen a ghost,” the shopkeeper said, his voice laced with amusement. Robert just stared, unable to respond.
