The silence in the car was deafening. Sarah stared out the window, watching the familiar streets of her childhood blur past. The houses looked smaller, the trees taller. She knew every pothole, every crack in the pavement.

Her father's hand rested briefly on hers. “It’ll be fine,” he said, his voice a low rumble. She didn't respond. It was not fine. Her career had crumbled, her relationship had imploded, and she was here, back in the small town she'd sworn she'd escape.

She imagined herself, a few short months ago, radiating confidence. Now, she felt like a ghost, a shell of her former self. Pulling into the driveway, she felt a wave of nausea. A sense of being completely adrift.
