My jaw nearly unhinged. They wanted *me* to train the person who was going to take my job? After all the years I'd poured into this company, after the late nights and the missed weekends? The request hung in the air, heavy and ridiculous. I could barely breathe.

My boss, Mr. Henderson, just beamed at me, completely oblivious to the internal earthquake that was currently happening. "Think of it as a smooth transition, Sarah!" he chirped. Smooth? More like a slow-motion car crash. My hands were clammy, and I felt a hot flush creep up my neck.

I managed a tight smile, the muscles in my face protesting the effort. "Of course, Mr. Henderson. Anything for the team." The words felt like sandpaper in my mouth.
