The coach's words hung in the humid air like a lead weight. Maya, usually so sure of herself, felt her stomach clench. He wanted her… at center? After years of honing her skills as a libero, diving, setting, and covering, this was a complete curveball. Her hands, usually itching for the ball, suddenly felt cold and clumsy. Her gaze flickered around the gymnasium, taking in the familiar squeak of sneakers on the polished floor, the rhythmic thud of the volleyball. The other players were watching her, a mix of curiosity and worry etched on their faces. A flush crept up her neck, a telltale sign of her inner turmoil.
