"Alex, we need you in the backstroke." The swimming coach's words hit Alex like a tidal wave. He had spent years specializing in freestyle, the only stroke he'd ever truly known. He felt a surge of discombobulation.

His gaze flickered around the pool, the familiar blue water now seeming to mock him. He swallowed hard, a lump forming in his throat. He saw the other swimmers, their bodies sleek and efficient, preparing for their sets. He felt a wave of doubt crash over him.

He cleared his throat. "But… backstroke?" The question came out as a squeak. His entire body felt leaden, his usual confidence completely drained. It felt like he'd been dropped into a different world.
