"You, Thomas, we need you to try synchronized swimming." The synchronized swimming coach's words were a surprise to Thomas, who was a diver. His entire body felt as if it had been struck.

He stared. The aquatic facility and the other athletes were a vibrant swirl of movement and color. He looked down at his own hands, calloused from years of gripping the diving board. He was utterly thrown.

He felt the familiar pressure of the diving board at his feet, but now, it felt distant. He swallowed, the air thick with unfamiliar scents of chlorine and hairspray. The thought was unexpected, disorienting.
