He leaned back, his chair creaking under his weight. He replayed the interview in his mind, trying to understand how this was possible. They were both offered the same job? His mouth went dry.

He felt a sudden urge to laugh, but he suppressed it. He felt the need to get up and move, to pace, to do something to release the tension that had seized him. He didn’t know how to react. He wanted to understand, and the situation seemed utterly unfathomable.
