From the kitchen, David watched through the partly open door as Emily whispered into her phone. Her back was to him, but he could see the furtive way she held the device. Her usual vibrant energy seemed to have been replaced by a tense stillness. He’d never seen her like this. It was a secret phone call.

His coffee cup slipped in his hand. Hot liquid splashed on his fingers, but he didn't feel it. He stood frozen, the silence in the kitchen amplified by the frantic thrumming in his ears. What was going on? Why the secrecy? He needed to know.
