The memory of the charity gala hung between them, thick and cloying. "Remember the speech? You absolutely nailed it!" Charles grinned, leaning forward with enthusiasm. His words struck like a blow. He felt a pulse begin to hammer behind his eyes.

He remembered the speech. He remembered the crippling stage fright, the shaking hands, the stuttering delivery. He could still feel the flush of embarrassment burning his cheeks. This was not possible.

"Honestly, it was amazing," Charles continued, oblivious. He fiddled with the silverware on the table, as if it was the most interesting thing in the world. He wanted to scream.
