The phone slipped from his grasp, clattering to the floor. Tom stared at the wall, seeing nothing. His carefully crafted world was suddenly a lie. The woman on the other end of the line was still talking, but he couldn't comprehend.

He rose from his chair, a slow, deliberate movement. He felt an intense pressure in his chest. His hands, usually so steady, were shaking.

He moved to the window, gazing out at the familiar street, which looked utterly foreign. He felt like he was falling, but there was nowhere to land. The world was spinning.
