Clara stood frozen in the doorway, the aroma of burnt cake stinging her nostrils. The living room, usually a kaleidoscope of color, was drab, devoid of the vibrant streamers and scattered confetti she’d been imagining. A single, flickering candle sat on the untouched cake, its flame dancing a mocking jig. Her heart dropped. This wasn't right.

“Hello?” she called out, her voice barely a whisper. Silence. Then, a rustle from the shadows by the fireplace. Her best friend, Maya, emerged, clutching a crumpled tissue.

Maya’s face was a mask of sorrow. “Clara, I… I have something to tell you.” The words hung in the air, weighted with unspoken disappointment. The planned party, the carefully orchestrated surprises, the joyous laughter - all vanished like smoke. Clara felt a strange, hollow ache in her stomach.

The cake, now looking like a sad, lonely creature, seemed to stare up at her with a single sad candle. She stepped back, her hand flying to her mouth, not quite believing what she'd discovered.
