The front door swung open, and the silence of the house crashed over Elena like a physical wave. Streamers. Balloons. The echoing laughter of friends and family. All the delightful chaos she'd envisioned. It was an empty, echoing tomb. She felt a cold trickle down her spine.

Her husband, Mark, appeared at the top of the stairs, looking pale. His expression – a mixture of guilt and concern – told the whole story.

"Elena," he began, his voice barely audible. "There's... there's been a change of plans."

She stood there, frozen, the anticipation that had been bubbling inside her all day suddenly deflating. The carefully laid plans, the weeks of secret preparations, the secret joy she felt knowing people were planning a special day just for her. All gone. A dull throb began in her temples.
