He swore under his breath, a low, guttural sound. Thomas, the senior programmer, couldn't believe his eyes. He had been meticulously reviewing the payroll records, trying to figure out where the budget cuts would land, and there it was. “Emily Carter, Software Intern… $80,000.” He felt a strange tingling sensation in his fingertips.

He slammed his fist lightly on the desk, the cheap particleboard rattling in protest. He had trained Emily! He’d spent hours helping her, answering her questions, guiding her through the complexities of the code. And she made almost as much as him?!

He spun around in his chair. The entire office seemed to be spinning. He needed to sit down. He took several deep breaths, and began again.
