Jessica couldn't believe what she was hearing. She was in the cafeteria, and overheard a conversation. "Yeah, I negotiated to $100,000," the new marketing coordinator had said, laughing. Jessica’s fork clattered to the floor. She felt her face burn. The other woman was young and full of confidence.

She felt a wave of anger, followed by a deeper sense of bewilderment. She'd been in the marketing department for seven years! She had a Master's degree! And she made less.

She picked up her fork, her hands shaking slightly. She just looked down, not wanting to make eye contact with anyone.
