The familiar chime of the text message notification broke the silence of the evening. Michael glanced at his phone, expecting a message from a friend. Instead, it was from Anya. He clicked on the message, the words shimmering on the screen.

“I miss you. Te quiero mucho.” He stared at the screen, his mind struggling to process the information. He'd been learning Spanish, and he had never revealed the fact to her. He was suddenly conscious of the blood rushing in his ears. He reread the message, then looked around the empty apartment. The world seemed to shift on its axis.
