The flashing news alert on her phone – "Local bakery, Sweet Surrender, to close its doors" – hit her like a physical blow. Her fingers fumbled with the phone, the screen blurring before her eyes.

She instinctively reached for her keys, her heart pounding in her chest. The bakery was just a few blocks away. She had to go there. To say goodbye. To see it one last time.

She stumbled out the door, her pace quickening, her footsteps echoing on the empty street. She didn't know what she expected to find, but she knew she had to go. The very air felt heavy with a sense of loss.
