He had found the book at a yard sale, a bargain copy of "War and Peace" that promised a weekend of reading. As he settled onto the couch, the book creaked open and a small, rectangular object slid out. It was a photograph.

He froze, his breath caught in his throat. He recognized the man. The man was his grandfather, in uniform. The man was smiling. He had died decades ago. He stared intently, his vision narrowing.

“Well now,” he finally said aloud, his voice low and shaky, his eyes fixed on the image. His past was suddenly alive.
