He stared at the open page on the floor. His diary. The one he’d hidden under his mattress. There, next to his discarded socks, lay the culprit – his roommate, Mark’s, biology textbook. His skin prickled with a sudden, icy sensation. He hadn't even heard Mark enter the room. Just a hushed footfall and then…this. He felt a wave of coldness wash over him.

Mark was sitting on his bed, flipping through the pages of his own textbook, pretending nothing was amiss. He looked up, his eyes meeting his roommate's. “Oh, hey,” Mark said, his voice light. “Just getting some air. What are you doing?” He swallowed, a lump forming in his throat. He couldn't speak. He just wanted to leave the room.
