Her vision blurred, and the room seemed to shrink. The journal lay open on the desk, the words she'd so carefully written now vulnerable. Across the room, her roommate, Jessica, was stretching, humming a carefree tune. It was a calculated performance, she was sure of it. A chill ran down her back, and she wrapped her arms around herself.

“Jessica,” she croaked, the word sounding foreign even to her own ears. Jessica turned, her face a picture of feigned innocence. "Yeah? What’s up, Sam?" The question was innocent, but the deliberate casualness of it felt like a betrayal. Sam wanted to vanish.
