"Thank you for your effort, Tim," Coach Harrison said, forcing a smile. He knew the kid's heart was set on this, his entire summer dedicated to training. He had just delivered the news.

Tim's mouth hung open slightly, as if he were struggling for air. The color drained from his face and he began to shake his head rapidly, as if the motion might somehow erase the words he'd just heard.

He’d expected protest, even anger. But the sheer disbelief etched on Tim's features sent a shiver down Coach Harrison's spine. The air felt thin, unbreathable.
