The screen flickered, the accusations against Victoria Thorne burning into Elias’s retinas. Thorne, the author whose work had been the bedrock of his literary education. This was impossible.

He read the comparisons, his jaw tightening. It was all there, laid bare. His breath hitched in his chest. He looked around the room, at the signed posters, the first editions.

He felt a physical ache in his chest, a deep hollowness. He felt as though the foundation of his intellectual life had been ripped away. He slowly lowered himself back into his chair, utterly defeated.
