Liam stared at his phone, his jaw slack. *“You are cordially invited to a Black Tie Gala, celebrating the birthday of Ethan Blackwood.”* The date. It was the same day. He’d booked a bouncy castle, a live band, and a custom cake shaped like a giant video game controller.

He’d put so much effort into this. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he had. His eyes darted around the room, as if searching for an escape. He pictured Ethan's party - a sophisticated affair. A wave of heat crept up his neck.
