"Did you see the email?" whispered Emily, her voice barely audible above the hum of the air conditioning. Sarah nodded, her face ashen. They were standing by the coffee machine, the usual morning ritual now tainted with something else. Emily’s hands trembled as she poured her coffee, spilling some on the counter.

The company picnic, planned for next month, suddenly felt absurd. The casual Fridays, the holiday bonus… all of it seemed to fade into a haze of insignificance. A wave of dread washed over her, chilling her to the bone.

She looked at Sarah, her coworker and friend. They exchanged a look of pure bewilderment. They both knew they’d need to update their resumes. She swallowed hard, struggling to keep her composure. "What are we going to do?" she asked, her voice cracking.
