Liam’s fingers, which had been tapping a nervous rhythm on the desk, stilled. The news hit him like a physical blow. Professor Chen was, in effect, abandoning him. Leaving him. He felt as though the floor had vanished beneath his feet.

He leaned back in his chair, his mind reeling. He'd spent months working on this project, relying on the professor’s guidance and expertise. Now, everything felt uncertain, the future, bleak.

He pushed his glasses up his nose, his gaze fixed on some point in the middle distance, and the silence in the room stretched out, heavy and suffocating. He didn't know what to do. He didn't know where to start.
