Rain lashed against the windowpane, mirroring the storm brewing inside Emily. She’d always envisioned a future where she and Jessica lived next door to each other, growing old together, and now that was shattered. Jessica’s words – “I got accepted to grad school in Maine” – echoed in her ears.

Her jaw clenched. She felt a cold wave wash over her, a deep chill that settled in her bones. She couldn't feel her legs anymore. The air seemed thin, difficult to breathe. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go.

“Maine?” Emily finally managed, her voice cracking. The single word felt too big for her throat.
