Gemotions

The dog, Buster, wouldn't stop barking. He paced back and forth in front of the window, whining. I followed his gaze, and my breath caught in my throat. The eucalyptus, a fragrant sentinel by the fence, was gone. It had fallen into the Peterson’s pool.

I felt a sudden, inexplicable lightness. He’d admired that tree. Always commented on its beauty. The sheer impossibility of it! The water was now churning. I stood there, unable to move, unable to think.

I rubbed my eyes, blinking, as if to clear a dream. I could smell the eucalyptus, even now. The whole situation felt completely unreal.
