The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things. Amelia coughed, waving away a cobweb that brushed her face. Sunlight sliced through a crack in the boarded-up window, illuminating a trunk nestled in the corner. Her mother’s name, in elegant script, was scrawled on the lid. Inside, tucked beneath faded photographs and moth-eaten shawls, was a small, leather-bound notebook. She flipped it open. The first entry: "Learn to tango." Her hand flew to her mouth.

The next few pages were filled with a spidery script, each item a small, surprising defiance of the life she'd always known. "Visit the Eiffel Tower." "Ride a camel." "Publish a poem." Amelia stumbled back, the notebook clutched to her chest, her breath catching in her throat. The woman who’d always baked perfect apple pies and worried about the price of groceries... this was a side she’d never glimpsed.
