Ben stared at the email, the screen blurring before his eyes. It was from the building management. He’d just finished a long, stressful day at work, and all he wanted was to collapse on his couch and watch some mindless television. Instead, this. His jaw went slack, and he let out a soft, involuntary sound.

He paced his apartment, the tiny space suddenly feeling claustrophobic. The hardwood floors, which he usually found comforting, now creaked like a bad omen with each step. His stomach was twisting. What would he do? Where would he go?
