He'd been looking forward to his evening: a quiet dinner and a book. The letter, however, shattered all that. He ran a hand through his hair, his fingers tangling in the strands. He felt a sudden, inexplicable heat in his cheeks, a flush that spread down his neck.

He walked to the window, staring out at the street. The familiar cityscape, usually a source of comfort, now seemed alien and unwelcoming. The lights of the other buildings, typically a friendly sparkle, now seemed to mock him.

“Well, I’ll be…,” he breathed, his voice a low, strangled sound. He felt a profound sense of loss, a sinking feeling in his stomach.
