He stood in the hallway, the envelope clutched in his sweaty palm. Sunlight streamed through the nearby window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, but the light seemed distant, unable to penetrate the sudden, heavy silence that had fallen. His vision blurred slightly, the world outside the envelope fading into a watercolor wash. He felt a peculiar detachment, as if watching a scene unfold from a great distance.

His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat in the stillness. The crisp paper in his hand felt fragile, insignificant, and yet it held the power to shatter everything. The news was unwelcome.

He slowly crumpled it, but changed his mind and tried to smooth out the creases. He needed to understand. He needed to make sense of the new reality.
