The letter remained unopened on the kitchen counter, its weight a physical presence in the otherwise empty room. She traced the embossed name of the university with a trembling finger, hesitant to face the verdict. The thought of this was enough to take her off-guard.

The mundane objects of the kitchen, the familiar appliances, the chipped ceramic mug, all seemed to gleam with a strange, unsettling clarity. She felt detached, a spectator in her own life. A sense of disembodiment washed over her.

She picked up the letter, the paper cold against her skin. She had to. But she just couldn't.
