The notification popped up on Leo’s phone: "Kayla is nearby." He stared at the screen, a bizarre blend of elation and disbelief coursing through him. It was a dating app, a place where he'd connected with Kayla, a girl with the same sarcastic wit and love for obscure indie bands. Now, the app was telling him she was *close*.

He looked out the window of his cramped apartment. The usual street scene, the cars, the pedestrians, suddenly felt charged with potential. His mouth was dry, his stomach doing somersaults. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous habit he hadn't realized he had until that moment.
