“Are you kidding me?” Mark whispered, rereading the email. He’d poured his heart out to this girl, Chloe, for over a year. She was the one who *got* him. The one he could be totally himself with. Now, the email said she lived three streets over.

The small, dingy apartment suddenly felt too small. He paced back and forth, unable to settle. The ordinary objects of his life - the chipped mug, the worn armchair - seemed to take on a strange, new significance.

He dashed outside, catching his breath as the cold air hit his face. Three streets. He started walking. He rounded the corner, and saw a girl standing on a porch, texting. She looked up, and smiled. He knew it was her.
