The professor’s words echoed in her head, a repeating phrase that slowly morphed into a deafening roar. Her hands trembled as she clutched at the edge of the desk, knuckles white. She tried to speak, to defend herself, but her voice was trapped, lodged in her throat. Her gaze darted around the room, taking in every detail – the worn rug, the overflowing bookshelves, the diplomas hanging on the wall – as if trying to memorize them. Everything seemed impossibly important and yet, unreal. She felt a disconnect from her body.
