The clinking of silverware and the murmur of conversation seemed to fade into a dull buzz. James saw Olivia, and his internal monologue stalled. He’d built himself up to be indifferent. He was over her. He was happy. The truth, it seemed, was that none of that mattered.

He felt a curious disconnect, as if he were observing himself from a distance. He took a sip of his wine, the liquid suddenly tasting like ashes. He had to remind himself to blink.
