The antique phone, usually a silent ornament, buzzed to life. Amelia watched, frozen, as David answered it in a hushed tone, disappearing into the kitchen. Her pulse quickened. He hadn't seen her.

She crept to the doorway, leaning against the frame. His back was to her. The way his shoulders slumped, the slight tremor in his voice… It was unfamiliar. What could be so captivating that he needed to hide it from her?

She bit her lip, a strange mixture of fascination and something akin to dread swirling in her stomach. The sunlight streaming in through the kitchen window illuminated dust motes dancing in the air, but she barely noticed. Everything seemed sharp, hyper-real.
