The phone call had come just as he was about to leave his apartment, a cascade of preparations complete. His breath hitched in his throat. His entire body began to feel light, almost weightless. Everything he'd planned, the carefully laid out surprise for his grandfather’s eightieth birthday. Gone.

He slowly lowered himself onto the edge of his bed, his legs feeling like they were made of jelly. The news didn't register like sadness, but as something else. He felt a weird form of confusion, that seemed to bubble within him. The room began to spin.
