"The venue is unavailable. The party is off." The simple text message echoed in her mind, repeating with each step she took through the deserted party hall. The music was already set up, but the DJ was gone. The caterers had left. Her heart felt as though it had become a rock, heavy and inert in her chest.

She went to stand on the stage. She imagined herself greeting people, thanking them for coming. The stage felt enormous, and the empty hall seemed to stretch for miles. She let out a long breath, and the echo of the room swallowed it whole.
