The information slammed into her like a physical blow. She'd been in the meeting room, listening to the CEO's presentation, when someone let it slip. Little Sam, fresh out of college, was making more than Lisa. Lisa who had trained him! Her hands clenched into fists, hidden in her lap.

She sat in stunned silence as the CEO continued to speak, the words washing over her, meaningless. She couldn’t bring herself to make eye contact with anyone. When the meeting ended, she moved slowly, as if underwater.

Her usual quick pace, once a source of pride, now seemed a burden.
