The review, a digital serpent, had just landed in Chef Antoine’s inbox. He stared at the screen, the harsh red font of the critic's words blurring. He swallowed hard, the muscles in his throat constricting. His hands, usually so deft and precise, trembled as he slowly lowered the phone. It was as if his very foundation had crumbled. The man, a culinary titan, had essentially called his life’s work “pedestrian.”

He pushed away from the counter, the smooth, cool granite suddenly felt foreign beneath his palms. He took a tentative step towards the window overlooking the bustling kitchen. The clatter of pans, the sizzle of the grill, the focused energy of his team – usually a symphony to his ears – now seemed distant, muffled. He felt the weight of the city, of the expectations, of his entire career, settle upon him.

He thought of his grandmother, her patient hands and her belief in the power of a perfectly roasted chicken. Her ghost seemed to be in the room, her voice barely a whisper in his ear. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he'd adopted.
