“Bland,” the single word hung in the air, a verbal hammer blow delivered by the critic. Chef Anya felt a tremor run through her body. Her carefully cultivated reputation, her years of hard work, seemed to evaporate in an instant.

She stood frozen in the doorway of her restaurant. The happy buzz of conversation, the clinking of glasses, the aroma of spices and roasting meats, all now seemed distant and distorted. She felt a pressure building in her chest, a suffocating weight.

She glanced at her staff, their faces etched with concern. She wanted to speak, to reassure them, but the words wouldn’t come. She swallowed hard, trying to regain control. The criticism had reduced her to silence.
