The key, cold and heavy in Maya's hand, felt like a small, silver brick. She paused on the cracked porch, the paint peeling away like sunburnt skin. The air, thick with the scent of honeysuckle and dust, wrapped around her. Her brother, Leo, coughed, shifting impatiently behind her. She slowly pushed the key into the lock, the tumblers groaning in protest as she turned it. The door creaked open, revealing a shadowed interior. She took a breath, holding it, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Sunlight, muted by the dusty windows, slanted across the hallway, illuminating motes of dancing dust. She stepped inside, careful not to disturb anything. The silence was profound, broken only by the whisper of her own breathing. Her hand reached out, tracing the pattern of the wallpaper. She couldn't believe this was hers.

“Well?” Leo prompted, his voice echoing in the stillness. “You coming or what?”
