The moment Amelia saw the house, a peculiar lightness filled her chest. It was a feeling she couldn't explain, something between excitement and reverie. The porch was covered in weeds and the shutters were crooked, but the structure's bones were solid. The memory of the inside felt like a blurry dream, but the sight of the house itself held her in place.

Her brother, David, was already rummaging through a box in the trunk, looking for tools. She didn't move. She wanted to absorb the scene, to etch it into her memory. She walked slowly towards the front door, her feet feeling like they were barely touching the ground.

As she reached the door, she closed her eyes. She put her hand on the wooden door, and felt the wood's ridges. She stood there, silent, her mind racing.
