The leather felt strange in Elara's trembling hands. It wasn't the texture, soft and worn, that sent a shiver through her. It was the weight, the sheer, undeniable heaviness of it. She glanced around the nearly empty bus stop, heart hammering against her ribs. Sunlight glinted off the zipper of the wallet, begging to be opened. Hesitantly, she pulled it apart, and her breath hitched. Stacks of crisp bills stared back at her, a silent, powerful monument.

She felt a dizzying pressure in her chest, like being submerged in water. Her fingers traced the embossed initials on the outside, a simple ‘J.H.’. A sudden, potent image of the owner's face flooded her mind, a brief glimpse of their likely shock, and the potential emptiness they might now feel. Elara knew, with a certainty that settled deep in her bones, that this was not hers to keep.

She swallowed hard, the taste of metal sharp on her tongue. Her gaze flitted from the wallet to the peeling paint of the bus shelter, the indifferent sky above, then back to the money. This was an amount that could change things, could erase debts, could... She didn’t even want to finish the sentence.
