"Well, now," Beatrice muttered, her voice barely a whisper. She smoothed down her floral dress, a nervous gesture she hadn't realized she was making. The wallet, found clutched within a gnarled tree root during her afternoon walk, seemed to radiate a silent challenge. Inside, nestled amongst credit cards and a driver's license, lay a substantial amount of money.

She felt a dizzying lightness, a sensation akin to floating. Her fingers traced the edges of the bills, each one a promise, a secret. She envisioned buying her granddaughter a new bicycle, paying off her mounting medical bills, all the things that had seemed unreachable.

But the image of the man in the photo ID flashed in her mind, his kind eyes and slight smile, and she understood that this sudden gift was not for her. She knew what she had to do, the knowledge a heavy but also relieving burden.
