The pickup truck rumbled to a halt on the overgrown drive. Dust billowed, momentarily obscuring the two-story house, its paint peeling like sunburnt skin. Sarah, clutching a worn photograph of herself as a giggling five-year-old on the porch swing, found her throat suddenly thick. She'd known this day was coming, but seeing it, truly *seeing* it, felt different.

Her boots crunched on the gravel as she stepped out. The air hung heavy with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a smell that instantly transported her back to autumn afternoons spent raking piles with her dad. A low hum filled her ears, a pressure building behind her eyes.

She walked slowly towards the house, her fingers tracing the rough texture of the faded siding. It looked smaller than she remembered, less imposing.
