Maya’s breath hitched as she rounded the corner. Balloons, a rainbow explosion, bobbed against the turquoise sky. Her best friend, Chloe, was having a pool party. Music thumped, laughter echoed, and the sheer vibrancy of it all made her feel weightless. She spotted Chloe, radiant in a floral dress, surrounded by a gaggle of giggling girls. Maya's hand instinctively flew to her own, slightly rumpled, handmade invitations. Her own party, a quiet stargazing gathering, suddenly felt so… small.

She felt a wave of dizziness, and had to grip the fence for balance. The smell of chlorine and sunscreen mingled with the sweet scent of Chloe's birthday cake. Each detail – the perfectly iced cupcakes, the matching swimsuits, the effortless joy on everyone's faces – shimmered with a perfection she couldn't match.

A small voice inside her said she should turn around and go home, but her feet stayed planted. Chloe saw her, and her face lit up. "Maya! You came!"
