The photograph felt hot against Leo’s palm. It was a posed shot of his grandfather, Samuel, supposedly a war hero. But in the photo, taken during the war, he wasn't in uniform. Instead, he was in a suit, sitting at a table with several well-dressed men, laughing. There was a conspicuous absence of anything military.

He blinked, confusion tightening his chest. He'd heard countless tales of heroism, of courage under fire. He felt a wave of nausea. He hadn't known what to expect from these old family photos. A sinking feeling began to replace his excitement.
